From the top, about 400 m above the city, you see the whole old town, and the climb starts right from the promenade in the centre.
About the place
Tâmpa is 960 m high and largely a nature reserve of about 150 hectares, with bears, lynx, wolves and many butterfly species, according to Romanian Wikipedia. From the 13th century the Brassovia fortress stood on the upper plateau; it was pulled down in the mid-15th century and only traces of walls remain. On foot you climb the zigzag path that starts from the promenade below Tâmpa.
The cable car also leaves from the promenade and takes a few minutes to the top; it ran all through summer 2026, according to reviews. The Belvedere viewing platform near the top station has been closed since May 2026 because it was unsafe; in August 2026 the city signed a contract for a new timber platform, due three months after work starts. Until then the view is from the summit.
Good to know
- The cable car timetable changes with the season and it has maintenance days; check at the bottom station before you go up.
- In winter the path can be icy: wear shoes with good grip and do not climb in the dark.
- Bears live in the area: leave no food on the trail and stay on marked paths.
