The tower finished in 1559 is the only old town gate still standing, and Rope Street is only 1.11–1.35 m wide.
About the place
For almost three centuries Catherine's Gate was the only way out of the walled town towards Șchei. The tower of the outer gate, with four corner turrets, was completed on 17 September 1559; the rest of the gate was pulled down in 1827, when the neighbouring Șchei Gate opened, according to Romanian Wikipedia. Along the walls, the După Ziduri promenade leads to the Black Tower and the White Tower, and the Weavers' Bastion houses an exhibition of the County History Museum, open Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–17:00.
Rope Street links Cerbului and Poarta Șchei streets: it is about 80 m long and 1.11–1.35 m wide and appears in 17th-century records as a passage for firefighters. Since 2026 the city has been preparing to restore the façades along it, and CCTV cameras will be fitted after the works.
Good to know
- Rope Street is very narrow: come early in the morning to walk it without a crowd.
- In December 2026 the trees along the După Ziduri promenade are lit for the holidays, according to the city hall.
- The Weavers' Bastion is closed on Mondays; buy tickets at the door, last one at 16:30.
