It is the largest Gothic building in south-eastern Europe, more than 89 m long, and keeps old Ottoman carpets inside.
About the place
Building began in 1383 on the site of an older church and ended around 1477. It was a Roman Catholic church and after the Reformation became the Lutheran church of Brașov's Saxons; its name comes from the fire of 1689, which blackened the walls. Inside you see Ottoman carpets hung from the galleries, the large organ and a late-15th-century mural of the Nativity.
From 16 October 2026 to April 2027 it is open Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday and Monday 12:00–18:00; last entry is 20 minutes before closing. On 9 and 16 November 2026 the church is closed for autumn cleaning. The surrounding courtyard is about to be restored: the contract was signed in October 2026 for up to 24 months.
