It is the heart of old Brașov and, from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, home to the city's Christmas market.
About the place
The square won the right to hold markets in 1520, and Saxon, Hungarian and Romanian merchants traded around it. The Council House, the old town hall, has a tower built between 1521 and 1528 and a pyramid roof from 1909–1910; since 1950 it has been a museum, with the permanent exhibition of the County History Museum, open Tuesday–Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 (last ticket 16:30).
The 2026 Christmas market has a preview on the weekend of 27–29 November, when the stalls open, and opens officially on 30 November from 17:00 with a stage programme and the lighting of the tree and the city lights, according to Brașov City Hall. It runs until 3 January 2027 with more than 50 stalls, most of them for craftspeople and producers from the county. The 2026 theme is 'Childhood': children get the 'Story Town' on Piața Sf. Ioan and large figures along the promenade below Tâmpa.
