The Lutheran church is recorded from 1384 and keeps an organ built in 1781 by Johann Prause and restored in 2004–2010.
About the place
Piața Unirii is Râșnov's old centre: a long, paved square with old houses, the town hall and the tower of the Lutheran church at its northern end. The inclined lift up to the fortress starts behind the House of Culture, and the forest path also climbs from the square. There is an underground car park below it.
The Lutheran church is a medieval basilica with three naves of different heights; its structure may date from the 13th century, and it is first recorded in 1384. The organ was built in 1781 by Johann Prause and restored in 2004–2010 by Ferdinand Stemmer. The Lutheran community now has about 150 members and is served from Vulcan; no visiting hours are posted, so ask the parish to see the interior.
Good to know
- Leave the car in the underground car park below the square: from here you can walk everywhere in the centre.
- To see inside the church, call the Lutheran parish on +40 268 546 980.
- 1 km to the south, on Strada Romulus Cristoloveanu, is the old Orthodox church of St Nicholas, dated 1384 by an inscription in the altar.
