It is the symbol of the town: medieval walls, towers and refuge houses, with views of the Bucegi, Piatra Craiului and the Țara Bârsei plain.
About the place
The first fortress here was built by Saxons and the Teutonic Knights between 1211 and 1225 and later rebuilt in stone. It is first recorded in 1335, when it withstood a Tatar siege, and it remained the inhabitants' refuge until the 18th century. Inside, the walls, towers and the small houses where families kept their provisions have survived.
The interior has been closed since 2020: restoration work stopped in 2022, and in October 2026 the town hall named a new contractor, whose tender is being contested. A partial reopening is expected from 2028 and a full one in 2029. Until then you can visit the outer garden and the Báthory Tower, with temporary exhibitions and a mountain view, with a ticket bought at the entrance. In winter the garden is open daily 9:00–17:00, in June–August until 19:00. Go up by the inclined lift from Piața Unirii, daily 9:00–17:00, or on foot along the forest path.
Good to know
- The ticket for the garden and tower is paid by card only, at the entrance; children under 12 go in free.
- The lift climbs the 93 m height difference in about 2 minutes; on foot, the forest path from Piața Unirii takes about 20 minutes.
- In winter the path can be slippery: if it is icy, take the lift.
