The fortress was never taken: in 1612 the villagers held out here against the army of Prince Gabriel Báthory, and the tower chapel keeps paintings of the Last Judgement.
About the place
The village is first recorded in 1240. The Romanesque basilica received a bell tower on its west side in the 13th century, and in the 15th century the church was rebuilt in Gothic style. The first wall was raised to 12 metres and strengthened with seven towers. In January 1612 the villagers held out here against an army of about 7,000 men led by Prince Gabriel Báthory, and the fortress was never taken.
On a visit you see the church, the tower chapel from around 1300 with 15th-century wall paintings, the walls, the bell tower, the storerooms, the ethnographic museum and a collection of Anatolian carpets. In winter (1 November – 31 March) it is open Monday–Friday 9:00–16:00 and Saturday–Sunday 10:00–16:00; in summer Monday–Saturday 9:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:00–18:00. Guided tours in Romanian, German and English, 30 or 45 minutes long, should be booked ahead.
