It is the heart of the old town, a listed urban ensemble with old houses, cafés and two historic churches a few steps away.
About the place
Piața Republicii was the market where the villages of the Făgăraș Land sold their produce, and craftsmen and merchants built their houses around it. The houses, from the 18th to the 20th century, mix Saxon influences with Austrian Baroque, and the area belongs to the listed urban ensemble “Zona de nord a orașului”. At no. 19 stands the Embacher House, an interwar confectionery that is now a restaurant.
North of the square is the Saxons' Lutheran church, built in 1841–1843 on the site of an older church that had burned. It is a large hall church with a clock tower; from the old church it kept the altar, the pulpit canopy, the font, a wooden statue of Saint Paul and some gravestones. On Strada Ion Codru-Drăgușanu, at no. 7, stands the Orthodox Holy Trinity church, built between 1783 and 1791.
