It is the classic route to the Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei pass and Moldoveanu, Romania's highest peak, with views of the glacial cirques of the Făgăraș range.
About the place
The trail marked with a red triangle starts near the monastery and climbs through spruce forest, past waterfalls and rocks, to the hut meadow in about 2.5–3 hours. From there the path climbs another 2–2.5 hours to Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei (2,188 m) on the main ridge, and the onward route to Moldoveanu Peak (2,544 m) is a long full-day tour for experienced hikers.
The Valea Sâmbetei hut was built in 1927, taken over in 1931 by the Transylvanian Saxons' hiking club (SKV) and rebuilt in the 1970s. The old building was demolished in February 2024 and a new hut is being built on the site. By November 2026 we found no announced reopening, so do not count on beds, meals or water to buy up there.
Good to know
- The hut is not operating: carry water and food for the whole hike.
- From November to April the upper valley has snow and avalanche risk; in winter stay on the forest section or go with a guide.
- In an emergency call 112 or Salvamont on 0SALVAMONT (+40 725 826 668), and tell someone your route before you set off.
