It is a category A historic monument and one of the best-preserved fortified churches in Transylvania, little altered over the centuries.
About the place
Cincșor, Kleinschenk in German, appears in records from 1377. The Gothic church was built between 1421 and 1427 on the site of an older Romanesque basilica, and in the mid-15th century it gained a first ring wall and a defensive storey over the choir. Today the ensemble has two lines of walls, a bell tower and four defence towers on the green in the village centre.
The Saxon community has shrunk sharply: in 2011 it had 22 members. The church has no fixed opening hours, but you can visit during the day with the key from someone in the village. From Sâmbăta de Sus you get there on the road towards the DN1, through Sâmbăta de Jos and Voila.
Good to know
- There are no fixed hours: ask for the key in the village and go in daylight.
- Even without the key, the walls and towers are easy to see from around the enclosure.
- Combine it with the stud farm at Sâmbăta de Jos, on the same road.
