It is the country's first tourist village, and its museum keeps the Olympic torch from Munich 1972 and an iconostasis from around 1800.
About the place
Șirnea is recorded from 1729 and has old wooden houses, pastures and sheepfolds. Teacher Nicolae Frunteș founded the village museum in 1964 and prepared Șirnea's accreditation as a tourist village in 1968. For more than three decades the village has held Olympic Day on 23 June, for which the International Olympic Committee gave it a trophy.
Since 2019 the Nicolae Frunteș Ethnographic, Olympic and Contemporary Art Museum has had a new section in three classrooms of the village school, with about 700 items: the Olympic torch from Munich 1972, a painted wooden iconostasis from around 1800, a dowry chest from 1890 and an alpine horn. The old premises, with about 1,500 more items, are closed. Visits are by request, with Radu Frunteș, the founder's son.
