From the village you look straight at the Piatra Craiului ridge, and marked trails start here for the Zărnești Gorges and for Bran.
About the place
Măgura is one of the six villages of Moieciu commune and sits on the eastern slope of the Piatra Craiului Mountains. Its houses are spread over pastures and hay meadows, linked by dirt lanes, with the church and the cultural centre in the middle. Marked trails start here: to the Zărnești Gorges and Fântâna lui Botorog, over the Măgura saddle to Bran, and to Tohănița.
Biathlete Gheorghe Gârniță, the only world-championship medallist in the history of Romanian biathlon, comes from Măgura, and British writer Arabella McIntyre-Brown settled here. The road climbs from Moieciu de Jos through the village of Peștera; in winter check its condition before you set off.
Good to know
- Walk up the upper lanes towards the pastures: from there you see the whole Piatra Craiului ridge.
- The marked trail to the Zărnești Gorges drops down the other side, towards Zărnești; see the Zărnești page for details.
- For a meal, La Măgura is right next to the church.
