It is the natural monument that gave the village its name: an undeveloped cave a 10-minute walk from the village.
About the place
The Bat Cave, also called Peștera Mare or Peștera Badichii, is carved into Jurassic limestone at about 950 m. Its main passage is 162 m long with a clay floor, and it is a protected area within the buffer zone of Piatra Craiului National Park. Excavations in 1957–1958 found traces of Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlement.
The cave is not developed: there is no lighting and no guide, and the floor is covered in clay and guano. Bats hibernate here in winter, and park specialists have asked for visits to be limited. It scores 4.1 on Google from almost 1,000 reviews.
Good to know
- Go only between April and October: from November to March the bats hibernate and must not be disturbed.
- Bring a head torch and clothes you can get dirty: inside there is clay and guano.
- Do not touch the bats, do not use a flash and keep your voice down in the passage.
