About the place

On 19 November 1377, King Louis I of Hungary granted the people of Brașov the right to build a stone fortress at Bran to guard the road between Transylvania and Wallachia. It was finished in 1388. Legend ties it to Dracula, but Vlad the Impaler only passed through with his army, in 1459. On 1 December 1920 the city of Brașov gave the castle to Queen Marie. Between 1920 and 1932 the architect Karel Liman turned it into a royal summer residence, and an English park with two ponds and a tea house was laid out around it.

In 2006 the castle was returned to the heirs of Princess Ileana, and it is privately run. The standard ticket covers the castle and the Royal Park; the Torture Rooms and the Time Tunnel are included only in the Royal Tour tickets, with an hourly guided tour in Romanian or English. From 1 April to 30 October the last entry is at 19:00, and from 1 November to 31 March at 18:00; on Mondays the castle opens at 12:00. On 1 December 2026, from 14:00, the castle lights its Christmas tree and celebrates Romania's National Day, with free entry to the Royal Park.
