It is the oldest monument in Șimon, listed as of national importance, and it stands at the gateway to the valleys that climb into the Bucegi.
About the place
The church was built in 1791 with money from Șimon's shepherd farmers. It was strengthened in 1985–1986, painted in fresco in 1988–1989 by Gheorghe Zaharia and reconsecrated on 14 October 1990. The ensemble, a category A historic monument, includes the church and the stone crosses in the yard.
Șimon stretches along the river of the same name at the foot of the Bucegi. Marked trails start from the upper end of the village towards the Moara Dracului waterfall and Omu Peak, and a forest road climbs to Poiana Gaura. On this road stands the memorial to seven soldiers, six Israeli and one Romanian, killed in a helicopter crash in 2010.
Good to know
- The church's opening times are not published; your best chance of finding it open is the Sunday service.
- The trails to Moara Dracului and Omu are long and steep; in winter deep snow makes them hard, so go only with mountain gear and a checked forecast.
- After your visit you can eat at Brandeberg or Hanul Șimon in the same village.
