It is the main starting point for the Piatra Craiului ridge, the longest and highest limestone ridge in Romania, and you can drive here.
About the place
The road of about 11 km leaves Zărnești past the visitor centre and climbs the Bârsa Mare valley to the meadow. Here are Cabana Plaiul Foii, a few other lodges and guesthouses, a campsite, a car park and a ticket machine for the national park. You can also walk from Zărnești on an easy trail marked with a red stripe, about 3 hours.
From Plaiul Foii trails lead up to the 25 km ridge, which reaches 2,238 m at Piscul Baciului (La Om), a climb of about 1,400 m. In winter the trails to the ridge call for winter gear and experience; the meadow and the valley road stay fine for walks.
Good to know
- Buy the park ticket from the machine at Cabana Plaiul Foii or online before you set off.
- In winter come with winter tyres: the road climbs the valley for about 11 km from Zărnești.
- For a short outing, walk the valley road or across the meadow; the climb to the ridge takes a full day and good fitness.
