About the place

The church is first mentioned in 1270, but the old building collapsed, and today's Neoclassical hall church with a chancel and western bell tower was built between 1810 and 1813. The altar with its organ gallery, the pulpit and the font were made partly at the same time and partly in 1822. Of the 15th-century fortification the ring wall and four towers remain; the fifth collapsed in 1925. On the south side are the ruins of the old Saxon school.

The climb to the church is steep, over round river cobbles. Village lore says the castle guard had to be a cobbler, to mend on Sundays the shoes women broke on the way up. The enclosure was restored with EU funds between 2010 and 2014. The village keeps many old houses, and the hills around are good for walks to the neighbouring villages.
