It stands in the commune's main village, 8 km from Viscri, and keeps a wartime inscription written by the priest in the tower, with the year 1680 hidden in it.
About the place
The late Romanesque basilica of the 13th century was prepared for battle early: the side aisles were pulled down, and the nave and tower received defensive storeys. In 1500 the chancel was raised with a defensive level with machicolations, and today's tower was added in 1847. The 14th-century ring wall has four towers and once had grain stores along its inner side.
Inside, the church is tall and narrow, with a two-tier gallery on the north side built between 1680 and 1775 and painted by the Roessler family, grandfather and grandson. The walls are built of marine rock with visible fossils. In the tower, priest Johannes Nösner wrote a wartime message of comfort in which the capital letters hide the year 1680. The enclosure was restored with EU funds in 2010–2014, and in 2026 it hosted a Transylvanian brunch.
